If you had asked anyone what operating system you should use 15 years ago, they would have fixed you with a suspicious look and asked what planet you are from, as here on Earth, we use Windows. Over the past decade or so, however, things have changed, and the assault has come from two directions. On the one hand, Apple has taken on Microsoft at its own game. Just as Bill Gates company cornered the software market by making the bundled service offerings of MS Office a no brainer, the popularity and interconnectivity of Apples mobile devices has made one of their laptops the logical choice for many buyers. And from left field, the rise in freeware availability has made Linux a compelling choice for those on a budget. Lets take an objective look at each laptop operating system.  Windows It is still the biggest player, but from complete dominance a few years ago, Microsoft now has a market share of less than 50 percent. However, despite the increased competition, it still has plenty going for it, not least that it has been around for more than 30 years, and we all know our way round it. There is also an effective and mature support network around â€" you can guarantee that if you have a problem, someone else has had it before and found the solution. There are cons, however, and not just the fact that it will cost you at least $100. Windows 7 in particular is quite heavy on resource usage, and can lead to hanging on lower powered machines. Windows is also by far the most exposed when it comes to viruses, so you need to be well protected. Mac Over the past decade, MacBooks have become an increasingly popular choice for those seeking a sleek, user friendly and premium quality laptop. From a user perspective, it is a little different from Windows, but most MacBook owners feel completely at home within a day or two, and very few ever look back. Ten years ago, a downside was compatibility, but these days, Macs are so ubiquitous that any app worth using is available. Support is just as strong as Windows, and if something goes wrong, you can easily find advice online or from a specialist such as Fix Apple Now.  Linux While both Windows and Mac have been around since the dawn of time (by IT standards), Linux is the relatively new entrant, and first appeared in the early 1990s. The biggest advantage is that it is open source, so it will not cost you a cent to install. Of course, it is not as slick or user friendly as Windows or Mac â€" if it was, we would all be using it and it takes a little setting up. You can then download similar open source versions of Wordprocessing and spreadsheets apps, to be up and running at zero cost. Which is right for you? Ultimately, there are pros and cons to each. If you want the best of the best and are prepared to pay for it, then nothing beats a Mac. For those with a bit of IT knowledge who are on a tight budget and are not fussed about a system that looks a little old fashioned as long as it does the job, then Linux is the way to go.

Women in Medicine The Great Balancing Act It is still quite a way from it, but it has also come quite a distance from the past. Women in the medical profession, believe it or not, is now closer than ever to being equals to their male medical colleagues. Some years ago women were confronted with a number of challenges too becoming doctors and finding careers in the medical field. Now you will find that there is actually a larger percentage of female graduates and more newly qualified female doctors than men.  By their sheer number, women are making a big difference. While many graduates are coming out with big dreams, the problem is two pronged. Sexism might still be prevalent among men towards women, but the other problem includes women limiting themselves when it comes to career progression. The problem is not the lack of women in the field. There are many women and opportunities in the field, be it in surgery, general practice, urgent care. For example, I talked to  Dr. Manuel Momjian  from  the Glendale Urgent Care Center, and he explains that they are among the medical centers who take  pride in their continuous effort to find females in the health industry. It may be hard to think that women have a hard time pushing to the upper echelons of their fields, especially since they have pushed as far as needed to be part of it. However, many studies will show that throughout history women doctors neither get commensurate compensation or advance as rapidly than their male counterparts. They have long faced inequality in resource allocation, and for this, they themselves are apprehensive and become tolerant of the situation. Women also have to worry about a having the larger share of responsibility over their home, and ths affects many things. Firstly, the time they spend on their career to improve themselves or to mentor others is limited. Their priorities are split between career progression and their role as nurturing mothers at home. This applies not just to women in the medical field. This debate in priorities affects women everywhere, as the opportunity for career growth has slowly been increasing for them. Women in the medical field are the epitome of a woman in a career-family balancing act. In working with peoples lives, you have to put your all. We all know one medical superwoman that we have looked up to for conquering such a tedious and challenging field. What we dont see are the challenges that they face when not facing us. This is something to keep in mind and be grateful for, next time you pay a female medical practitioner a visit.

An interesting post went out into an online recruiter forum recently. Bill Boorman, Founder of Tru, wrote: “Looks like GooodJob are following Joberate and setting spy alerts for fight risk on social media content. Received today: ‘Did you know that Network Monkey (our new product) can scan your employees social media profiles for changes indicating theyre looking for a new job? Thats right, we monitor your employees and notify you in advance so youre in the driving seat.’” Whoa. Things just got a little more difficult for active job seekers who are currently employed. Big data is tracking your every move. Everyone knows that employers are watching. But this really puts it out there in black and white. Between spyware on company computers and servers to monitoring your daily activities, employers like to know what is going on internally. But monitoring social media feeds and collecting big data through automated tools puts job seekers really under the microscope. Your every move is being watched. Any job search “twitch” on social media could generate a report to your boss. Clandestine job searches could become an oxymoron. Big data is collecting information on you. There is one magic key to all of this. And it means you could carry on without much worry. The trick? ALWAYS have a constant stream of content. The biggest and baddest giveaway of employee discontent is a flurry of social media activity after a long period of silence. What you want to do is to create a constant chatter that involves connecting and engaging with people online that creates signal noise to employers who might be watching. You obviously want it to be meaningful, but if you are consistently adding connections, interacting with key influencers, updating your profile regularly, and posting updates, there aren’t the activity peaks that usually alert employers to employee discontent. Create content regularly so that you are establishing your online presence, building your profile, engaging with the right people, and expanding your network so that when the time comes to look for other employment, it’s easy to pick up the phone and have that offline conversation that opens doors.

Book review The confusion - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Ive gotta come clean here: Im a huge fan of Neal Stephensons work, so when I heard that hed written not one book, but a series of three books each around 900 pages long, I was thrilled. Then I read the first one (Quicksilver), and to be perfectly honest, I was bored. I felt it had its moments, but that it wouldve been twice as good if it had been half as long. I started on the second book in the series (The Confusion) , and ground to halt about 200 pages into it. Too boring. I really wanted to like Quicksilver though, so I wrote this luke-warm review of it. Man, was I ever wrong! :o) A couple of months ago, I decided to re-read Quicksilver, and what a change that made. Suddenly I got it. I found that in my eagerness to devour that book, Id missed most of it. You see, these books are subtle. They contain so much good stuff, but its not all out in the open you may have to work for it. On re-reading Quicksilver I really got into it, and suddenly, 900 pages seemed just right. Especially when there are two more book in the series, and the second one is even better. I cannot find words for how good The Confusion is. We still follow the people from the first book as they strive to find their way in the chaotic world of the late 1600s and early 1700s. The themes are still money, piracy, sex, slavery, science, black magic, etc. and the cast is still comprised of vagabonds, galley slaves, scientists, royalty, soldiers, priests, alchymists and much, much more. The action goes (literally) round the world, to places like Egypt, India, Japan, the Philippines, all of Europe and, of course, Qwghlm, the fictional Island that also appears in Cryptonomicon. I am in awe of how many themes are woven together in this book, and of the amount of research it must have taken. I have never had any sense of what the rennaisance was like, and suddenly the 1600s seem real and present to me. Ive done some fact-checking in Wikipedia, and it only serves to expand and deepen the picture that Stephenson paints of that period. The ending is just about the funniest, saddest, most satisfying, most intriguing and most annoying thing Ive ever read. And I cant wait to read the final book in the series which is The System of the World. Interesting factoid: Neal Stephenson wrote all three books with a fountain pen! I?ve written every word of it so far with fountain pen on paper. Part of the theory was that it would make me less long-winded, but it hasn?t actually worked. I think it has improved the quality of the actual work somewhat, simply because it is actually easier to edit something on paper than on screen. So usually every page of the original manuscript has been gone over 2 or 3 times before it goes into the computer and then when I type it into the computer that?s another pass again where I can make changes if I want to.
